What Should I Feed My Pembroke Welsh Corgi?

My corgi is overweight. He needs help to get on the couch sometimes. However he gets plenty of exercise. What should I feed him?

Here is the diet we use in Corgi Breed Rescue breed rescue. It works, I promise.

First do NOT use diet dog food. It is lacking in necessary nutrients. Feed a premium quality dog kibble. Fee 1/4 cup per 30 pounds of dog.(desired weight) Add 1/4 cup of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and/or green beans. For snacks feed baby carrots and apple slices. Gradually increase your dogs activity level. Your dog will loose weight.

Exercise for a Corgi should be 15 minutes or more in the morning, 45 minutes or more in the afternoon and 15 late evening as a potty walk. That is a minimum.

    Royal Canin-Weight Control.
Most expensive, but the best kind of food you can give to any dog. Research on their official website, it’s easily digestible, boosts their brains and many other advantages.

You can try to reduce the amount you feed him at each feeding. The recommended amount listed on the bag of food is often not completely accurate. You will need to experiment a little to find the correct amount.
For example, my Lab gains too much weight on 2 cups of food (twice a day), but loses too much on 1 cup, so I feed her 1 1/2 cups of food twice a day.
If reducing the amount you feed does not work in a month’s time, then you may benefit by switching to a formula made for less active or senior dogs.

Good luck! And remember to make any food switches gradually to avoid any upset stomach/bowel issues.

Feed him according to what his weight should be on the back of whatever dog food bag you are eating. As for certain brands..BS. My dogs have eaten grocery store dog food for over 20 years and haven’t had any problems(Purina). As for plenty of exercise..no, he’s not. Otherwise he wouldn’t be so fat he can’t get on the couch by himself. Run this dog for an hour a day. Walk him two or three times a day.

Best place to start is to go to the light/weight control/low fat version of the food that you are feeding. Watch the calorie content of foods if you are going to change brands because you can make it worse. Oh and talk to your vet about recommendations. I am a tech and we are more than willing to help!
