The small dogs of the Corgi breed were firstly raised to help farmers in herding sheep and other domestic animals. The corgioriginated in Wales, and there are two specific types of this dog. These two varieties of dogs are well known as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The Queen Elizabeth II owned a pair of dogs of this great breed for many years. The name Corgi has probably its origins in the ancient Welsh words Cor ci meaning dwarf dog.

The dogs of this breed were designed to help farmers with herding the small domestic animals near the house. The dogs use to pinch the animals on their heels to determine them to move where the farmer wanted. The statures of the Corgi dogs are low and they easily avoid to be kicked by the disturbed animals. Few other kinds of dogs but Corgi can be used to herd geese.

The Corgi is incredibly strong for its size as well as being agile and very fast. As most of the Corgi dogs are no more used to herd livestock, they prove to be very protective with small children. Corgi dogs are an extremely loyal breed that will protect their family no matter what the threat is. They are determined dogs, sometimes even obstinate, but you can use these traits in your benefit if you train them properly. They are very affectionate dogs, and are rarely boisterous making them ideal for smaller children, and elderly people.

You may find them quite gluttonous, especially considering their size, so be careful not to overfeeding them. Although there are two very similar types of corgi, there are distinctive differences between them. The Pembroke corgi is smaller and sturdier being lower to the ground. The higher body and the longer tail make the Cardigan Corgi the largest variety of the breed. Cardigan Corgis have also more elongated bones that makes this variety longer than the Pembroke Corgi dogs.

They are double coated dogs which have a dense, harsh outer layer of fur to protect them from bad weather, and a lower layer with softer hair to keep them warm. These dogs have fox like heads and their muzzles often present white markings. Their ears are often pricked and stand proudly on their heads, enabling them to hear everything that is happening. Both of the Corgi breeds are very healthy dogs that live for many years; and they have very few hereditary health problems.

The average life span of these dogs is between 12 and 15 years, if they are provided with good diet and regular exercises. Their short legs still need a good amount of exercise every day, because this way they will not get bored and will keep their health. They are obedient, agile and eager to learn tricks and practice their skills. Their desire to learn is apparent with everything they are taught, and will become very obedient dogs to have around the home.
