There are various available cages for rats. It is not only your dogs who will need a cage but also your pet rats. If you are choosing pet rat cages then do consider a large wire cage since this is the best cage so far in the market. The best thing about this cage is that it has horizontal bars which enables the rats to climb on the sides if they want to. On the other hand, a tall cage with ramps and platforms would be better and is ideal for providing room for multiple rats. Usually, a common cage measures 12 by 24 inches (2 square feet) of floor space. This is already great for two smaller rats so long as the cage is tall and you are able to give them shelves or hammocks for extra space needed. Always keep in mind that the larger the cage, the better it would be for your rats. You can also use large aquariums for them but they are a definite no-no when we talk about ventilation. Moreover, it is required to clean this cage more often.
When it comes to bedding, you should be able to avoid cedar and pine wood shavings. However, aspen and other hardwood shavings can be used. There are a lot of materials available in your local stores especially for choosing a cage rat. Moreover, they are absorbent, do not get dust and they are very soft and small. There are also some pelleted beddings which are very absorbent and are placed under a layer of softer loose bedding. You can also opt to give them some nesting materials in which rats can shred and use to line their nest box. Paper with no ink, tissues as well as paper towel – these are the nesting materials that can be prepared for them. It is usual that rats will be able to choose a bathroom location in a specific are of the cage. If you need to add more litter of heavy soil then you can get some and scoop it out daily. The whole cage must always maintain its cleanliness and it should be able to provide beddings for your pet rats.
A nest box is also very vital in the completion of the whole cage. A nest box should be provided – you can make it or buy it in the store. You can use a cardboard as they are accepted to be made nest boxes. You can also use flowerpot or jar turned on its side.
